I'm guessing that instalnv is confused about something.

Are you certain that you are trying to do an upgrade on box that already has the server installed?
If you have a client here, then you cannot both upgrade and install the server.  You'd have to install it fresh to change a client to a server.

Also, did you make the backup of the existing system from server setup?  You cannot do an upgrade without  a backup directory to install from.

Hi All,
Im having a problem when attempting the upgrade to 7.1.4 from
7.1.3 on AIX 5.1 server..  I issue the command  'instalnv -k  SERVER  -u'
and receive an
invalid syntax error and receive  -k <KIT>: kit to install where KIT is
CLIENT or BOOKS.   It does not provide me an option for SERVER...
I also attempted 'instalnv -k <SERVER> -u'  and receive : ksh: SERVER:
0403-016 Cannot find or open the file...  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks, Dave
