If you implement Tivoli Enterprise Data Warehouse, then availability reports are provided in the warehouse. If you look at the document for the Warehouse Implementation Pack for Netview that comes with Netview, you can see a list of the reports provided.  This is new functionality in recent releases, and is different from the little availability guage you can see in Netview for Windows - that little function is not available on Unix.

TEDW uses a different set of databases than Netview used before. That mechanism does not involve  a RIM. If you are NOT going to implement TEDW, then your next best bet for reporting on Netview data would be to implement the regular Netview RDBMS. That does require the RIM, and to use the RIM you must install Netview through the Framework. Storing the data in the (classic?) Netview RDBMS does not provide you with reports, only a place to store data that is easier to manipulate with something like Crystal Reports. And keep in mind that availability as determined from up and down events is not trivial. Crystal Reports won't help, I don't think. The classic RDBMS would save those events for you. You would then have to do the calculations, measuring downtime and uptime from the timestamps. I've done it and it is a real big hassle.

If you are being asked for availability reports, and don't already have another product installed that provides it, and especially if you have other Tivoli products like ITM, you should be planning to implement TEDW. Try to get the other Tivoli folks at your site, like the ITM folks, to set it up, and then add Netview to it.

In the suer group meeting they spoke about availibility data and snmp performance data being sent to DB warehouse.

What availability data are they speaking of?  Is this the data from the Netview (For Windows) That if you right click on an object and choose object properties it gives as one of the tabs the availability of the device.  And if so is there an equivalant to this in UNIX.  Cause in UNIX when you do object properties of a node or device it simply does a ovobjprint on that object there is no availability data?

Also in anyones opinion what would be the benefit to loading Netview via the TIVOLI FRAMEWORK vs.  Simply loading it as a non-tme stand alone server.  I understand that without loading it via framework I cannot connect to a relational database.  Which I guess has its usefulness in that with a relational database I can do queries against the database to gather information in a more formatted manner.   Anyone have preferences or thoughts about it.

Thanks

Chris Petrina
