Yes, the device is a Cisco switch. Actually, what happened is that an
administrator changed the hostname for 130 devices. But the following day,
the old name was back. And of course Netview was held for responsible.
Can yo tell me more about this IOS bug ?

CiscoWorks that changed the hostname on a device at random.

You should be very skeptical. What evidence do your network people have
that NetView is doing this? Any at all?
NetView itself has only two tools - ping and SNMP. And for SNMP it does
only snmpget and snmpget_next. Never snmpset.
You, as an operator, could do a set from command line or the MIB Browser
of course, provided you know the write community name for the device. But
Cisco devices usually are configured with the snmpset function disabled.
They can also be configured with a write community name unknown to anyone
but the administrator. And this would make it impossible to change the
config without logging into the box.
Could you have someone doing this with Ciscoworks?

Can Netview change a device's hostname on its own ? I don't mean in the
Netview database or on the map but on the device itself.
Network administrators believe Netview changes hostname in running config
of
some Cisco devices. I am rather doubtful.
