Bill explained it to you as well as anyone can. I don't know what else to say except to repeat it.
NetView keeps status by ICMP (ping) and SNMP . If you get false downs, then it is because your pings or SNMP queries are not being returned in a timely fashion. So then you should adjust the time-out and retry counts until you don't see false downs any more. I would not raise the retry count more than 3 times, but you can adjust the time-out as high as you like. It's your network. You will have to experiment to see what is right for your environment. You can try pings and snmpgets from the command line at various times of the day to help you establish a baseline.
As for "real" status, I am not certain what you mean by that. You can configure your devices (routers, etc) to send traps to NetView when they have a problem. But when a device fails, it will seldom be able to send a trap immediately before it dies. It will just "go away". That is why NetView keeps tabs on it by status polling. You just have to adjust the polling parameters so that NetView doesn't think it's unavailable when in fact it is.
Perhaps I should add that while NetView uses the term "down" for the sake of simplicity, you should actually think of it as meaning "this device is not responding to my polls as it should, according to the way you have configured me to monitor it".
Hope this helps,
James Shanks

There is no need to alter any NetView traps. Bill's explanation was meant to show you how to differentiate between agent traps, sent by devices in your network, and NetView internal traps.
The fix for "false downs" is to adjust your polling parameters.

Hi Evan,
Does changing the polling interval resolves the issue do I need to change the Source type from Netview to Agent in Trap customization?
Thanks & Regards
