Hi, Sontaya;
xhost command is placed usually in /usr/bin/X11 (run the whence xhost command).
By this command you allow X clients to
use a display on a workstation where this command has been executed. For
instance, suppose you have boxA and boxB and
you want to run motif application on boxA but you want to see it on boxB. Then,
on boxA you export DISPLAY=boxB:0. But
to allow this connection on boxB you must run xhost +boxA (or xhost +) on boxB.

As I do not use sound alerts I unfortunately do not know other programs that do
the same. Maybe someone else on the
list?

Best regards,
Vladimir.
