Leslie is correct. The -b option was provided so that the Performance Team
could try various schemes for improving ovwdb memory utilization under
controlled conditions. What they learned was incorporated into the
algorithms used to allocate memory based on the cache size. So setting the
cache to approximately 20% over the number of objects in your database
(ovobjprint -S will tell you how many you have) is the one, single tuning
option you should use. That's why -b was dropped from the man page. They
probably should have taken it out of the usage as well, but since ovwdb is
not started by the user from the command line, I guess they thought that
was unnecessary. It does still work, in case they ever want to repeat the
tests, but you should leave it alone. There are no published
recommendations for you to set it to so the likelihood is that if you use
it, you will make things worse. If your cache size is correct and you
still have performance problems, then you should contact Support.

Well, the commandline usage info does not match the man page for ovwdb.
I'll bet that option does not actually do anything any more. The one you
want
to mess with is the Cache. Make sure that is at least 20% greater than the
number of objects shown in the output of 'ovobjprint -S'. If cache is close
to
or less than that, and it defaults to 5000, you will indeed see super
slowness.

Hi there,
I found a command line startup option for ovwdb which looks interesting to
try ...
However I can't find ant doco for it (so far ...)
The output from "ovwdb -h" reports:
Usage: ovwdb [-O] [-d dbname] [-P <port>] [-n <number_of_objects>] [-b
db_buffer_size]
-O Assume started by ovspmd
-d dbname Set name of database
-P port Use <port> as the TCP port number
-n number_of_objects Cache only a limited number of objects
-b db_buffer_size Use a temporary <buffer_size> byte buffer in
the database to increase performance
I'm interested in trying the -b option as our system runs REAL slow.
nvsetup doesn't let you change most of these options, so I'd have to edit
the lrf file.
Anyone know if there is a default size setting, or is there none at all?
