The Cisco traps can be automatically formatted if you run this command:
nvaddtrapdconf /usr/OV/newconfig/SNMP-RUN/trapd.conf
If that seems like cheating, or you need help with non-cisco traps, here
goes:
1) In the dialog, look for the enterprise. If it is not there, add it. You
need a
name (you can make it up) and a dotted decimal - get it from Enterprise in
the card.
2)With that enterprise selected, do Add in the bottom half. The Generic
value
(6) is filled in when you select 'Enterprise Specific'. In the window, fill
in the
Specific from the card (1).
3) What should the trap look like in the Events Display? Put formatting
commands
in the box near the bottom. Try "Trap with variables: $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6"
Of course you are expected to know what the variables are for, so you can
put words between the variables that make sense. The way it is now, the
names of the mib variables are displayed in the card (provided the mibs
are loaded to allow the translation from dotted decimal). That is supposed
to give you a clue as to what they mean. I believe the Cisco 6/1 has to do
with tcpconnectclose, and you get them when people log into and out of
the router. Also note that you must not refer to more variables than
actually
exist, or you will get an error instead of a trap in the events display.
4) The other settings are not critical. You ought to put 'A' in source,
which
defaults to 'u', so you can distinguish Agent traps from Netview traps in
the
events display.
Once you have made one work, the online help should be easier to
understand.
It has good detailed descriptions of the various formatting statements.

Subject: [NV-L] Format trap manually
Hi,
I recieve unformatted traps that I'd like to manually make into something
understandable. I just
just don't fully understand how it works. One trap looks similar to this
and occurs when I
login and logout on one of the switches:
"
? Trap found with no known format in trapd.conf(4)
Enterprise cisco (1.3.6.1.4.1.9) community public
generic trap:6 specific trap:1
Timestamp:-1480988747 Agentaddr: 192.168.1.1 args(6):"
and then follows the 6 arguments and then:
"
SPECIFIC:1 (hex: 1)
GENERIC:6
CATEGORY: Status Events
ENTERPRISE: ENTERPRISES 1.3.6.1.4.1.9
SOURCE: Source not known (?)
HOSTNAME: 192.168.1.1
SEVERITY: Indeterminate
LOGGED TIME: 03/29/01 15:33:46"
So, could someone explain to me (like if I'm a three-year-old) how I do
this? I've been trying myself around in the Trap
Customization dialogs but I just don't get the hang of it.
Is there by the way somewhere (manual, redbook) to read about such things?
