Along with SMARTS, Riversoft & Tavve, you should check out Micromuse.
They have a syslog probe that does what you want.

if your demand is...
1. to save and store config files and images on a timely basis,
2. to save syslogs and have a look at it when a problem has occured,
3. to spend no money for managing your network...
...you could write some simple PERL scripts. (probably someone here will
post some sample scripts if that is what you need)

if your demand is...
1. to save configs automatically whenever running configs change,
2. to set up syslog reports that point out specific information from all the
syslogs,
3. to spend a little more money for managing your network...
... you should dump your NT installation and set up CW2000 on a solaris box
(with enough memory). that should work (at least for 1. and 2.)

if your demand is...
1. to save config files on a timely basis (automated saving upon change is
not necessary for you),
2. not to read syslog reports but define syslog messages that lead to
alarms,
3. to spend money, time and expert knowledge on planning and implementing a
solution that could be a massive improvement to your fault and config
management...
... you could combine your own scripting with a root-cause analysis tool
(like SMARTS, RIVERSOFT, TAVVE amongst many others) and possibly you would
not need CW2000 any longer.

tivoli has nothing in this area but netview interacts more or less with most
of the root-cause analysis tools.

hope this helps!

Betreff: [NV-L] cisco - router/switch configs and syslogs

We have been trying to use Ciscoworks 2000 (on NT) for over a year now and
cannot get it to work. Dr Watsons, popups, failures, etc.... A really
long journey with no end in sight (ugh)

Does Tivoli have a product in this area? I don't mean just inventory
("how many routers do I have"), but rather detailed management of the main
functions of that are of importance to us: Router/switch configuration
(IOS config) management and centralized syslog logging (that's all). I
just need the basics to work :-)

if not Tivoli, then does anyone else have other recommendations or
pointers to other products/shareware to do the config and syslog function?
any suggestions? what do you use for this?

much thanks for any help
