Ah. No. Those are provided by name resolution. So they will match
the node's Selection Name. Which is a good thing. That way you can
go from the event to the node with 'Options...Highlight Node on Map'.
Rulesets would be much harder to formulate, too, if they did not match.
You can make them all match and be short only if you override DNS
with an /etc/hosts file and give them all short names. This is where you
came in, right?

Yes, the names are only to the first dot on the map However, I meant to ask
if there is any way of changing it in the events?
>>> lclark@us.ibm.com 10/19/01 09:09AM >>>
Yes, would rediscover those nodes whose names no longer resolve.
And the fully qualified name will be used for the Selection Name, but
the map will show the name only up to the first dot. Is that not what
you are seeing?

Thanks Leslie. One more question: It is best to delete the these particular
servers and have netmon rediscover them?
Management is moving away from /etc/hosts file or using Netview Box as a
dns server. They will keep win2k dns for win2k servers and
internal/external dns servers on separate boxes.
When Netview discovers devices and resolves them via a separate dns server
it puts the fully qualified name. Is there a way to shorten the name on the
map/icons?
I guess I had 2 questions.. Thanks.....:)

That is a feature. Names are not removed when resolution stops working.
However, you will find that functions such as 'Monitor..MIB Values...System
Information' will no longer work because the commands they issue try to
resolve the Selection Name to an IP address. The same is true of lost
SNMP access. The field info will still say that it is SNMP-supported. The
moral of the story is that you should check periodically to make sure that
you have not lost function due to such external changes. I hang a simple
script off the Reports menu that can be run against a Smartset to look for
such losses by issuing an snmpget of the sysname mib variable for each
node.

NetView Discussion
Hello,
I am running Netview 6.0.2, AIX 4.3.3, Framework 3.7.1
There are particular Win2k servers that are registered in the win2k dns but
not in our internal dns nor the /etc/host file. Ok, so I kept getting node
down/up traps because apparently netview was having problems resolving the
names.
I did the following tests:
I added 1 server to the host file to test.did a demand poll name was
updated and all the traps stopped. Good.
Now I went and removed the name from the host file. demand poll. The named
of the server remained.
I did an nslookup no name found(forward and reverse). I did a host lookup
not found.
Question: why did the name remain on the icon label. why does netview still
recognize the name?
Thanks in advance
