root@sysview (/)# oslevel -r
5100-04

NetView 7.1.3

I've tried that from the beginning. Even running just X -vfb at the
command prompt returns the usage statement. I guess I should refer this
question to an AIX list instead since this is certainly an issue with AIX
and not NetView. I was just really hoping that you had the answer. All I
did was reboot. I just don't understand.

Thanks.

Allie

What versions of NetView and AIX and maintenance level are you talking
about?

The script is backgrounding the command, that is, using the &, but the
shell is passing the & to X11vfb, rather than handling it. That's the
problem, but I'm not sure of what the cure is... that is, what behavior the
author of the script had in mind.

There is an open APAR against the same behavior during installation.

You could change the startXvfb to use nohup and use 2>&1 > /dev/null ahead
of the ampersand...
That is, try this:
nohup /usr/bin/X11/X -vfb -n :2 2>&1 > /dev/null &

The problem can still be coming from the fact that a script or program is
calling a script.

Tell me if that changes anything.

Geo.

I am having this same exact problem. I haven't rebooting the server in
almost a year and after doing some maintenance I rebooted. Now I can't get
vfb started. All I get is the usage statement.

There was no response to this message, but I'm hoping Brian is still around
to give me some pointers.

I am having a weird one with my Netview server. I am trying to start the
X11 vfb for the web console daemon netviewd - but when I run startXvfb it
gives me a usage statement and does not start. It was working for months
until we rebooted the server this morning.

I have tried re-installing the X11.vfb package, but it still fails.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before?

Thanks,

Brian
