If trapd is running, and you issue "event -e FMTCHG", trapd will try to
reload /usr/OV/conf/C/trapd.conf.
If successful, trapd just starts using the new file and no messages are
produced.
If there are syntax errors in the file, you will see an error message
about them in trapd.log.
These should be corrected ASAP and the reload tried again, else it is
possible that trapd will not restart the next time, but will exit
immediately while issuing the same error message as you saw in the log.
Since trapd.conf has a very complex syntax, the utility for manually adding
and modifying traps, xnmtrap, will probably NOT be able to load the failing
trapd.conf either, because he uses the same syntax checker as trapd itself.
For this reason we don't usually recommend that you modify trapd.conf
outside of xnmtrap, except by using addtrap. Both of those have syntax
checkers to try avoid obvious problems. But once you have a trapd.conf
which won't load, then you have to use an external editor to fix it,
though it is delicate work at that point. You can make things worse
instead of better with vi, so be careful, and take backups as you go. If
you get thoroughly hosed, use the clean one we ship in
/usr/OV/newconfig/OVSNMP-RUN to get trapd going again, and then start
making changes to it carefully. There is no easy way to recover once this
is broken.

Also , if trapd.conf was corrupted through using addtrap, be sure an report
that to Support so that we can figure out why and fix it.

Good luck with this.

This is the first I've heard of such a recommendation. Good to know!!

As to fixing the trapd.conf file, is there a utility I can run to
parse it for errors, or does sending that change trap perform such a
task?

Thanks so much for all the input!
