I have always recommended using 255 instead of 0 because so many of the networks I see have devices with interfaces that are considered unnumbered, but show up in the MIBs with an address of 0.0.0.0, and this can cause some odd lines to appear on the map. There is nothing magic about the 0 as a place holder. Any not-likely-to-be-used address would do. The programmers chose 0 expecting that it would not be used by real devices, but they do turn up. Christopher Thanks for the update. It is good to know that 255 is also valid. IBM, If you are listening perhaps the NetView documentation can be changed to reflect this.
