Alan,
Thanks for the information, I think I understand. However now I'm curious
about something. From your example it looks like I would need to know all
the IP addresses ahead of time in order to include them in their respective
container. In my case that is very difficult since I don't know what the
router Ethernet interfaces would be in advance, plus they can change at any
time (these routers are our customer facing LAN interfaces which we don't
monitor via Netview). You are correct in your guess about what happens in
my case, the 300+ nodes I have on my IP Map are mostly the segments that are
connected to the containers I already have defined for storing a router. In
my ideal IP Map view, these interfaces and network segments would be in a
container simply called "Internet." Would I be able to use your logic by
creating something like this at the top of my location.conf:
INTERNET 1-9 Generic
INTERNET 11-255 Generic
Assuming that my companies network was 10.x.x.x (Which would have additional
entries listed in the location.conf), would Netview "do the right thing" and
send all segments to the INTERNET container instead of spreading them out
all over the IP Map? If this works then I can stop hiding 300+ objects from
the IP Map :)
Thanks again for the response!
Jason

I think you are on the right track but the is a bit more. Let us say that
for this example tour router has the following interfaces with the listed IP
addresses. I will also assume that the masks are /24.
Loopback0 192.168.100.1
Ethernet0 192.168.101.1
Serial0 192.168.102.1
Your location file looks like this now. I am assuming that you either create
this location manually or have other entries defining this location in the
seed file that you have not sent us. Note: This line does not create a
location container.
LOCATION1 192.168.100.1
Try this. This basically tells NetView to build your location container, add
to it the three networks 192.168.100.0, 192.168.101.0 and 192.168.102.0 and
add the router/gateway 192.168.100.1 to the location container. If you do
not tell NetView what to do with the other two networks that are on the
router NetView will probably place them on the IP map. This puts some of the
networks that your router connects to in your location and some at a higher
level map. This makes NetView have to select either your location container
of the higher level map. The rules that NetView follows are to select the
higher level map.
LOCATION1 192.168.100.0 GENERIC
LOCATION1 192.168.101.0 GENERIC
LOCATION1 192.168.102.0 GENERIC
LOCATION1 192.168.100.1
I am curious as to where the other networks that you router uses are placed
on the map.
Thanks

Hi,
I'm curious if someone would verify something related to this discussion,
the way I understand the documentation wouldn't someone be able to do this
in their location.conf file:
LOCATION1 192.168.100.1
As long as LOCATION1 is previously defined, Netview should place a router
with an interface address of 192.168.100.1 into the container LOCATION1,
right? The examples in the location.conf file call this a gateway entry.
The examples indicate that both names and IP addresses are usable for
gateway entries, but I remember someone previously saying on this list that
only IP addresses are valid in a gateway entry. In my situation I have
300+ routers that I currently hide from the IP Map that should be in
300+ their
own container as they are all defined with their respective loopback address
as a gateway entry. Maybe I should use the router name instead?

In order for location.conf to automatically place the router ALL
subnets present on the device must be in location.conf container. If
you have a router with 5 interfaces say in 4 different subnets (lets
assume you have a pair of serial links to another location that are
in the same subnet). all 4 of those subnets must be in location.conf
container for that physical site. If you miss one subnet in
location.conf the icon will float back to the ip internet map.

Correct. However using a fairly specific Location.conf file.
That device with the same name and ip addresses which shows up
correctly in the submap that it should, also keeps showing up
on the main IP Internet map. Now if you are saying that
because this device has multiple IP addresses that it will show
up wherever that network segment is, then I can understand that
and remedy that.

Chris,
NetView places a device on the IP Internet submap, when a
device has
multiple IP addresses in different IP subnets.

Me again,
Q1: Why does entview continually find teh same device multiple
times?
I
have a device that is already in one submap but it keeps
finding it
again
and placing it ont he IP Internet map. I have deleted it from
that
submap, I have ran ovtopofix and ovmapcount and even after I
delete it
once it is polling time again it just finds it again and places
it back
on
the map again?
Anyone?
